Katchie Cartwright, PhD, combines an extensive background in musical performance as a flutist and singer with ethnomusicology, specializing in improvisational traditions of the world. As a Fulbright Senior Specialist for the U.S. Department of State, she has worked in Europe, the Middle East, and West Africa. Dr. Cartwright has served on the board of directors of the Hague-based International Association of Schools of Jazz and as longtime chair of the Sisters in Jazz mentorship program for the International Association for Jazz Education.
She received a doctorate in ethnomusicology from The Graduate School of the City University of New York, an MA in music from Queens College, and a BS in flute performance from The City University of New York. She is currently a professor of music at Northwest Vista College, a post she has held since 2006. Her discography includes a variety of albums under her own name and as a side musician. She performs in The San Antonio/Austin area as a freelance flutist and with her world-jazz project, Katchie & le Monde Caché. Katchie hosts Caminhos do Jazz (Jazz Paths) Saturday mornings on KRTU 91.7 FM in San Antonio, a program offering world mixtures and collaborations, with an emphasis on Brazilian jazz in our backyard and abroad.
